AMD Announces Triple-Core Chip

Boston (dbTechno) - AMD has announced plans to introduce a desktop PC processor chip with three cores by Q1 2008.

The chip with three cores will go under the Phenom brand name. AMD will also be putting the Phenom brand name on its quad-core chips which will ship out by the end of the year.

The corporate vice president of marketing and strategy Bob Brewer stated that the move by AMD was made to meet market demand.

He stated that not many software programs can use four-core processors.

The three-core Phenom chips are made almost exactly the same as the quad-core chips. The only difference is that there is one less working core, meaning less power and tasks.

Intel has stated they will put out three-core chips under the Nehalem generation brand in late 2008.

Tilera Shows Off 64-Core Processor

Boston (dbTechno) - Tilera was a company set up to show off and commercialize technology developed at MIT and they have created a 64-core processor.
The 64-core processor has been created for general computer applications based on technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Nathan Brookwood, an analyst at Insight64, stated that “Tilera has done a lot of things no one else has done before.”

The chip is set up on a mesh system so each core can communicate separately. This allows for the data to move at a faster rate from one core to another.

Over a dozen customers are already using the Tilera chips. One of their customers is the networking applications company 3Com.

Tilera claims that the performance of their chip is 10 times that of the Intel dual-core Xeon processor.
